Adult Ministry

First Presbyterian has a rich offering of adult ministry programs aimed at study, fellowship, support and service.

Adult Education

Adult education includes Sunday morning seminars, classes, discussion groups, bible studies, video series and book reviews on a wide variety of topics. Classes meet from 9:30 am to 10:25 am before the 10:30 am worship service. Additional opportunities are also available during the week. Fellowship

Coffee Hour Fellowship is in the Narthex immediately following worship. Come join us for a fresh cup of coffee and good conversation!

Small Social Groups at First Presbyterian Church are for the purpose of conecting people in a social setting outside the church. Individuals, couples, families and households are welcome to participate and church membership is not required. You may join a group of people your own age or of diverse ages. You may enjoy the familiarity of a continued group or prefer to join a new group each year. The purpose is to gather people together to allow them to get to know others in the church family and the community. The choice is yours!

First Friday Fellowship meets the first Friday of each month at a different restaurant for fellowship and lunch.

Presbyterian Women (PW) is automatically open to any woman attending First Presbyterian Church. This group has many service, mission and fellowship activities including:

  • A program and lunch the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm.
  • Martha Circle - meets at 7:00 pm at the church on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
  • Circle of Hope - meets at 1:30-3:00 pm at church on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
  • John Dunning Guild - meets at noon for lunch on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Support and Wellness

Parish Nurses minister to the health of members of the congregation. The volunteer nurses may be contacted directly or through any of the pastors when members are in need of assistance with health concerns. the Parish Nurses offer the following services:

  • Wellness Support Group - Tuesdays at 5:00 pm
  • Blood pressure checks - first Sunday each month at 10:00 am
  • Individual consultation
  • Worship Services for Health and Healing - first Wednesday each month at 12:15 pm
  • Sunday morning seminars
  • Grief support during holidays
  • Referrals to health care providers and community resources

Congregational Deacons - The ministry of the Congregational Deacons is to provide sympathy, witness and service to members of the congregation. Each congregational member or family group has a Congregational Deacon assigned as their liaison to the church. Deacons minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who are in distress. They provide a multitude of support services including:

  • Home maintenance for those financially or physically unable to find assistance
  • Flower delivery to members who are homebound or in nursing homes
  • Nursing home visitation to extend care and love of the church to residents
  • Prayer Circle to arrange for special prayers for designated people
  • Transportation to appointments, church-related events, etc. where none is available
  • Delivery of meals to members during times of need

Service to Others

The members of First Presbyterian Church have a long tradition of service within the church, the local community and the world at large.

There are many opportunities to share your enthusiasm, skills, and gifts. Some require a longer term commitment, others need occasional service, still others are single events that need your help for just an hour or two.

Session Committees are responsible for much of the work of the church. They heartily encourage membership and volunteers from the congregation. The committees are:

  • Christian Education - Adult Subcommittee
  • Christian Education - Youth and Children's Subcommittee
  • Worship and Music
  • Stewardship
  • Finance
  • Property and Maintenance
  • Outreach (local and global)
  • Congregational Life - Service Subcommittee
  • Congregational Life - Fellowship Subcommittee

Just a few of the specific activities that need your time and talents are:

  • Phone receptionist
  • Preparing for Communion
  • Sunday liturgist
  • Providing Sunday transportation
  • Congregational Deacons
  • Boy Scout troop volunteers
  • Providing mentorship for confirmation class members
  • Preparing tapes of sermons for the tape ministry
  • Funeral reception baking or serving
  • Presbyter publication and mailing assistance
  • Child care for church events
  • Chancel Guild - maintaining and decorating the sanctuary
  • Church library volunteers
  • Historical preservation - maintaining church archives
  • Youth and Children's Ministry - helping with trips, events, Sunday School, etc.
  • Habitat for Humanity projects
